Surviving Myself

Mastering Brooklyn, Poverty, and the Art of Catastrophe

Meet my new friend from New Orleans: Veux Lafitte.

Born Sally Jenkins in southern Ohio to Margie Jenkins and a guy who might have been named Bob or Bill, but definitely owned a sweet vintage camaro in 1993, Veux decided that her double wide trailer would never offer her the mystery and excitement she needed.

After reading up extensively on pirates and vampires, Veux finally decided to change her name and run off to New Orleans last year. The plan was not as well thought out as she had hoped and she spent her first three weeks living on the streets and begging for spare beignets outside Cafe DuMonde.

Eventually she was taken in by a coven of young women and helped out until she got on her feet. When I found her she was working the early shift at a cafe on Royal and at night she would charge tourists to take pictures of her with fangs in.

I offered to bring her back to Brooklyn with me. I have the extra room and she really just needs a good influence to get her through these horrible teenage years. We’ve already made excellent progress since I finally got through to her that vampires aren’t real and even if they were, they wouldn’t fucking sparkle.

(Also I explained pirates are real, but they probably smell bad and live in Somalia).

We also plan to start detoxing her off blood soon. Until then I just keep buying steaks for myself and giving her the styrofoam them come on.

//Veux is actually a Quarter Kid, a hand crafted voodoo type doll made by Alice Smith, a local New Orleans artist. Each doll is different. Google them for info to contact the artist for your very own.//
